Sir Winston Churchill personal cigar. The cigar was given by Churchill to Thistle (Ces) Wells at Chartwell in 1945. The letter of provenance, below, accompanies the cigar. The cigar is a 16 cm Perfectos and carries a gold band, printed 'PERFECTOS' in black. There is no factory band and my research has failed to discover the origins of the Perfectos band (although it is very similar to the gold bands that Romeo And Juliet - Churchill's favourite brand - were producing in the 1940's). The cigar is housed in a protective plastic bag, of a later date, with the word 'Churchill' faintly stamped along its length. A rare piece of Churchill and cigar memorabilia, directly linked to the last days of the Second World War.
This cigar is one owned by Sir Winston Churchill. It was given by him to Thistle (Ces) Wells, Oakdene, Ide Hill Road, Sundridge, nr Sevenoaks, Kent. Mr Wells was a Special Constable during the Second World War and Sir Winston gave him this cigar while on duty at Chartwell. Mr Wells died 22/9/68. As Mr Wells was a non smoker, he passed the cigar on to my eldest brother Robert Henry Lush and on his death his widow gave it to me. Walter J Lush.
